RvB: Dreams

She was dreaming.

Washington hadn't watched her sleep often, but he knew enough to tell by the subtle twitch of her hand, the way her lips curved up in an almost smile, the soft words she subconsciously whispered, too low for his ears to pick up. She wasn't screaming or crying or curled into herself, clutching her skull, like she had so often since the project. It wasn't a nightmare.

Carolina was having a dream.

But they needed to get moving. The Reds and Blues would be awake soon, and they couldn't stay in the small safe house she had led them to for much longer. Wash stood in the doorway of the small room, wondering how to go about waking her up. At best, he'd get a glare and sharp complaint. At worst, he'd have a gun pointed at his head.

Deciding to take the chance he made his way over to Carolina's makeshift bed. One of her arms was curled under the pillow, her fiery red hair falling across her face and spilling onto the sheets. Wash tentatively reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder, shaking her gently. "Come on boss. Wake up. We need to leave." Carolina huddled closer into the blankets, letting out a small whimper.

"Five more minutes, York."

Wash blinked down in surprise, before letting out a resigned sigh. He carefully pulled the blankets up to cover her shoulders before turning away, shutting the door quietly behind him.

Let her dream. A tiny voice pleaded in the back of his mind. It's all she has left now.
